The EFBWW stands in solidarity with the Finnish Industrial Union (Teollisuusliitto) and UPM Plywood workers following their recent struggle to secure fair and just company-specific collective agreement.
It is deeply concerning to learn of the coercive actions that were reportedly undertaken by UPM Plywood against its workers, including threats of factory closures, dismissals, personal intimidations and undue pressure aimed at undermining their lawful strike. Such tactics violate the European charter of fundamental rights and its principle of freedom of association and fair labour practices, which must be upheld at all times.
The right to organise, strike, and negotiate fair working conditions is fundamental to a democratic society and must be respected by all employers, regardless of their size or influence.
The attempt to weaken collective bargaining through intimidation and coercion sets a dangerous precedent, not only for UPM Plywood employees but for workers worldwide. These actions run contrary to the European fundamental rights protected under Finnish labour laws, and international labour standards and EFBWW strongly condemns them.
Trade unions play a crucial role in ensuring that workers receive fair wages, safe working conditions, protection from exploitation and that their rights are respected. Any attempt to suppress these rights should be met with widespread condemnation.
We call on the Finish authorities to acknowledge the gravity of these actions, take this matter seriously and investigate the violations brought to light by Teollisuusliitto to ensure this does not happen again.
